The Plettenberg: the ultimate South African seaside escape

We sit high on a headland with extensive views across a beautiful bay to Storms River Mouth…

By Martina Barth
Group Sales Manager for The Plettenberg

The Plettenberg is one of the most iconic and superbly situated properties in Plettenberg Bay. Nature here – where cliffs and forests meet the Indian ocean – is dramatic. We sit high on a headland with extensive views across a beautiful bay to Storms River Mouth. Our guests have direct access to a sandy blue-flag beach.

The hotel was transformed into a luxury property in the late 1980s by Liz McGrath who, at age 60, became South Africa’s first female hotel manager. Within two and a half years The Plettenberg was invited to join the prestigious Relais & Chateaux portfolio, and is now part of the Small Luxury Hotels group.

Liz was all about hospitality and looking after people and that ethos is very much in evidence today. Time and again it is that heartfelt service that brings people back. Although we’re five star there’s nothing stiff or formal about The Plettenberg. We’re inclusive, not exclusive, and we welcome families and children of all ages. Our pool villas are very popular with families and groups of friends. From the Lookout Villa it’s possible to see pods of whales and dolphins.

Even though it’s a thriving seaside resort along the Garden Route, and a base for all sorts of outdoor activities, Plettenberg still retains its village feel. You can walk there from the hotel to enjoy the coffee shops and elegant boutiques. Plett Winelands is South Africa’s smallest Wine of Origin region and we have 18 wine farms on the doorstep. Many of these wines feature on our menus – along with our famous cheese soufflé served with a gin sauce. It’s a must!
