Flying high in a helicopter over the Victoria Falls

The waterfall is so vast in its setting that the only way you can fully comprehend its magnificence is from the air…

By Warren Ncube
Operations and marketing manager at Zambezi Helicopter Company

There’s no better way to fully comprehend the beauty and the grandeur of the Victoria Falls than to take a helicopter flight. It’s so vast in its setting that the only way you can fully comprehend its magnificence is from the air where you can see the upper and lower river and the surrounding areas as well.

Our flagship product is the Flight of Angels, which is 12 to 13 minutes long, which is mostly about seeing the Falls. The helicopter will do one-and-a-half circuits over the Falls on either side and then we’ll fly for about four kilometres upstream over the mighty Zambezi River and sneak into the National Park, albeit briefly, before coming back to land at our helipad.

Then we have the 25-minute Zambezi Spectacular, which we call a three-in-one flight. So you get to fly over the Falls. You get to fly over the magnificent Batoka Gorge all the way to rapid number 11, where we do whitewater rafting and kayaking. And then you get to see the Falls one last time. After that, you fly up the mighty Zambezi River again, but then you get to spend more time over the National Park and there is an ever-present chance of seeing big game. That’s why it’s three-in-one.

It’s an amazing, amazing experience, a must-do. Before the flight, some people can be a bit nervous if they haven’t been in a helicopter before and others are just really looking forward to the experience. But I suppose the most defining moment is when you see them after the flight because they’ll be all smiles, especially if they’ve just got engaged! I’ve witnessed so many proposals during and after flights that I think I should try my hand as a Marriage Officer.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Adele, who's travelled extensively in Zimbabwe. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember – the ranger who can show you the best game viewing and fishing spots on the Zambezi, the guide who’ll introduce you to ‘moonbows’ at Victoria Falls and the locals who’ll share their dinner with you.
