This lunar-like pocket of central Turkey is contoured into an alienesque terrain of deep Anatolian valleys and soaring boulders and spires carved out by human hands.
Visiting Cappadocia feels as if you’ve tripped and fallen into a surrealist masterpiece. Millenia of natural erosion has carved out cliffs, cones and pinnacles from the layers volcanic rock while manmade manipulation of this soft rock has resulted in a network of tunnels, caves and underground cities that once housed entire communities. This otherworldly landscape totally justifies its epithet, the ‘land of fairytales’, especially when the hundreds of iconic hot air balloons soar up into the sky at dawn of still days.
Open air museums and underground cities showcase the human side of Cappadocia; at UNESCO-listed Göreme you can dip into rock-sculpted churches where incredibly intricate frescoes coat the walls, while at Kaymakli, you can go subterranean and explore a 4000-year-old network of narrow tunnels and caves. The sheer scale of Mother Nature’s finest work is best seen on foot and there are ample hiking routes to follow you’re actively inclined; the trails that takes you through Gulludere (or Rose) Valley, or Pigeon Valley, are just a couple of our favourites. Gulludereis also the go-to spot for sunset; the changing colours of the pink-hued rock and the shifting shadows are an unforgettable sight.
If you’re tempted to experience this jaw-dropping wonderland, our Personal Travel Experts are here to help create your seamless Cappadocia holiday.
