The area is coined coconut city for its boundless plantations that stretch like a green, swaying sea into the horizon, their fruit transported all over India. Set in the foothills of the UNESCO-listed Western Ghats, Pollachi was Tamil Nadu’s best-kept secret until the film industry discovered its natural splendour – the area has now been featured in over 1,500 movies and often serves as a music video backdrop. Close proximity to the Ghats means the region also enjoys cooler climes and its streaming waterways give life to lime-hued tea groves.
Come to Pollachi to walk among paddy fields and forests, the sky a heady blue interrupted by the misty outlines of mountains. Pollachi town itself is famed for having one of Asia’s largest jaggery (concentrated blocks of cane sugar) markets, as well as South India’s biggest cattle market. Its produce stalls are immense too, overflowing with earthy vegetables and exotic fruit that flourishes in the surrounding fields; it’s thought that this fertile countryside lent Pollachi its ancient name Porul Achi, which translates to land of wealth and prosperity.
