Cat Tien National Park is one of Vietnam’s crowning glories, a biodiverse wonderland that provides sanctuary for endangered animals. Explore over 720 square kilometres of immaculate, lowland tropical rainforest with rich flora, recognised by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. It’s hard to believe that Cat Tien lies just four hours from Ho Chi Minh City as you hike or bike along forest-lined paths shaded by enormous trees with human-sized roots. You’ll be surrounded by birdcalls and the buzzing of insects while over 400 species of huge, colourful butterflies flutter through the air.
With an Ecotourism Centre, the park plays a key part in preserving Vietnam’s exotic wildlife, which includes clouded leopards, sun bears, rare Javan rhinoceros, dozens of primate species and Asian elephants. Trek to Crocodile Lake, a breeding area for Siamese Crocodiles and visit the Endangered Primate and Bear Rescue Centres where animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade are rehabilitated and, if possible, re-released. Take a night safari to glimpse nocturnal wildlife and visit Tai Lai ethnic village to lean the history of the area’s native inhabitants.
