It’s easy to see why Victoria Falls is often cited as one of the Seven Natural Wonders. Aptly named the ‘Smoke that Thunders’, the tremor of water plunging 100m into the earth’s underbelly can be heard from miles away. Bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe, the world’s largest sheet of falling water stretches over 1,700m, forming a cascading natural curtain that led the astonished explorer, David Livingstone in 1855, to famously describe it as “scenes so lovely they must have been gazed upon by angels in flight”. A helicopter ride over its billowing mist and zig-zagging gorges offers a hair-raising perspective of this natural phenomenon.
The falls could keep you transfixed for days, but away from the spectacle, the great Zambezi River beckons where you can hurtle down its frothing rapids on a white-water raft or simply drift along in a canoe for two down the river’s gentler parts. On land, hop on a 4×4 to explore Zambezi National Park keeping a sharp lookout for elephants, lions and buffalo in the wild.
