An interlude of African history: The Victoria Falls Hotel

As one of Africa’s most famous hotels, guests come here from all over the world to see the UNESCO-listed Victoria Falls…

By Temba Maripakuenda
Deputy General Manager of The Victoria Falls Hotel

Enjoy magnificent views of Victoria Falls from this five-star heritage property. Built by the British in 1904 on the back of Cecil Rhodes’s Cape to Cairo railway, the Victoria Falls Hotel originally housed workers constructing the Victoria Falls Bridge. Although it was easier to cross the Zambezi river by boat, the railway company wanted passengers to feel the spray of the falls from their carriages. Today, the hotel has become one of the most famous in Africa and draws visitors from all over the world – we’re the grand old lady that launched tourism in this region.

The hotel is loved for its traditional Edwardian architecture, with typical white columns and tall ceilings set among landscaped gardens with lily ponds – it really tells a story. We’ve kept the historic feel inside with four-poster beds and antique furniture while refurbishing over the years to add modern luxuries. From its original 40 rooms, we’ve also expanded to 161 and incorporated family rooms in our stables. Our suites and premium rooms have the best front-facing views of the UNESCO-listed Victoria Falls.

When you’re not out exploring, there are plenty of ways to relax at the hotel, including our pool, putting green and luxury spa. Art fans can also visit our gallery, which displays work by local painter Larry Norton, who you can often meet at the hotel. Don’t miss our signature high tea on the Stanley Terrace, which has brilliant views of Victoria Falls Bridge and spray rising off the falls. For dinner, our buffet restaurant Jungle Junction hosts regular cultural shows or you can enjoy a seven-course fine-dining menu in our Edwardian Livingstone Room.

One of the top highlights of the Victoria Falls Hotel is our location – we’re just a 10-minute walk from the falls and ideally placed for everything from bungee jumping and ziplining at Batoka Gorge to helicopter rides, water rafting and sunset cruises. However, we’re the only hotel with such a special view so it’s worth simply taking time to sit on the terrace and gaze out at the gorge and our iconic bridge. It’s all about the history, falls and the people too – guests love our hospitable, friendly team.
