Things to do in Tanzania

A walk in the wild Serengeti from Lemala Nanyukie Camp

We move slowly and pay attention to the tiny details: animal tracks, flower adaptations, insects and rocks…

By Andrea Pompele
Lemala Head Guide and Camp Manager

Join me on a walking safari in the Serengeti for an immersive nature experience. Unlike a game drive, there’s no barrier between you and the environment, you’re completely absorbed in the wilderness. We move slowly and pay attention to the tiny details: animal tracks, flower adaptations, insects and rocks. It’s like reading the bush telegraph, you learn what’s happened overnight and which animals have passed through the area. You’ll also get to see the plants that tribes in Tanzania have used for centuries to cure illnesses.

I’ll tailor the walk to your individual interests and it can last between two hours and an entire day. Often, we’ll drive to the river and follow animal pathways along the bank. There are plenty of crocodiles and hippos, as well as lots of animals who come here to drink, especially in dry season. We’re regularly able to approach elephant, buffalo, wildebeest and impala. Guests enjoy the excitement of being on foot in an untouched environment with wildlife all around. For safety, you’ll be accompanied by an armed ranger.

There are also various routes that I’ve established from Lemala Nanyukie Camp, one leads over the gully to a ridge that’s perfect for sundowners and has kopjes where lions roam; once I even saw a leopard stalking impala there. I also like to take guests to the Secret Valley from camp, there’s a panoramic viewpoint which looks over the Gold Mountains and Serengeti plains, then we can explore the valleys below. During migration, this area comes alive with predators and herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles – being able to walk with the migration is a very special experience.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Gemma, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
