Celebrate Africa’s wildlife and culture at Jock Safari Lodge

We’ve seen plenty of wildlife around the lodge including elephant, lion and leopard…

By Philemon Mhlanga
Food and Beverage Manager at Jock Safari Lodge

I have been at Jock Safari Lodge since 2014 and love meeting guests from all over the world. I enjoy trying to learn different languages to make guests feel at home from the moment they arrive. Jock Safari Lodge is named after the loyal dog of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, made famous in his book Jock of the Bushveld. We show guests some of the memorabilia that we have from this story.

Jock’s décor is very traditional combining stone and thatch.  Guests love their rooms especially when they see the free-standing bath on the deck and their private plunge pool.  For families, we have Fitzpatrick’s Lodge with three suites and a swimming pool set amongst rocks.

The views look out over the bush and we’ve seen plenty of wildlife around the lodge including elephant, lion and leopard. Guests are encouraged to go out on two game drives every day to enjoy our wilderness area. We were the first private concession in the greater Kruger National Park area with 6,000 hectares for us to explore.

Between their game activities, myself and the team are responsible for ensuring our guests have plenty to eat and drink, in fact they are fed at least five times a day. When they return in the evening from their afternoon game drive, it gives me the opportunity to make them our signature cocktail. I combine mango juice, blue curacao and grenadine to make an African Sky.

Mother Nature must be in the right mood for us to set up our outdoor dining locations, but if the weather allows, we know we are creating memories to last a lifetime.  Our river dining setting is probably my favourite location. Dining under the stars to the rhythm of the nocturnal sounds of the bush, perhaps if we are lucky we may even hear a lion roaring in the distance. Combining this wonderful setting with our delicious African cuisine, gives our staff the opportunity to celebrate our landscape and culture.
