Explore the Maasai Mara – an African icon

Home to the one of the world’s highest concentrations of wildlife, the Maasai Mara is Africa’s most famous national reserve …

By Paul Doig
Africa Travel Expert for Alfred&

Home to one of the world’s highest concentrations of wildlife, the Maasai Mara is a land of wide-open savannahs where cheetahs seek vantage points atop termite mounds, elephants roam and million-strong herds of wildebeest thunder across the plains during the annual Great Migration.

A visit to the Mara is all about revelling in the daily routines of this wildlife-rich haven. It’s about waking in your luxury tented camp before dawn to drift across the sky in a hot air balloon, watching the sunrise warm the plains. It’s about bumping along in a 4×4, binoculars in hand, on a quest to spot the Big Five: the spear-horned buffalo, parades of elephant, lions lounging in the marshlands, the elusive leopard and endangered rhino. It’s about savannah sundowners and falling asleep to the sound of hippos snorting in the Mara River.

Home of the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries for 12 years, the Mara is especially famous for its high density of lions, leopards and cheetahs. This is the place to come if you’ve always dreamed of spotting predators in the wild – it’s no wonder that the programme’s presenter, wildlife photographer and author Jonathan Scott, has a permanent base here.

Then there’s the Maasai people. Just as iconic as the Mara’s big cats, these nomadic, scarlet-robed pastoralists have roamed the Maasai Mara for centuries with their sacred cattle and today, often welcome visitors into their villages for a glimpse of traditional life.

Like the ancient Maasai customs and the animals who, like clockwork, make their annual pilgrimage to the Maasai Mara from the sun-scorched Serengeti, there’s a timelessness sewn into the very fabric of this land. So, come and experience the Maasai Mara for yourself. Marvel at everything from the majestic lion to the humble dung beetle, watch the sun rise and set over the acacia-studded wilderness and soak up the sparkling jewel in Kenya’s safari crown.
