Safari Guide at Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp

Go behind the scenes at the anti-poaching unit in Loisaba Conservancy, where you’ll get to meet our trained bloodhounds, Memusi and Nanyokie. The siblings are bluetick coonhound cross breeds from the Maasai Mara and although they’re based here, they can be sent all over Kenya to help track poachers. Trained in scent work by professional handlers since they were three months old, the dogs are so friendly and obedient, guests quickly fall in love with them.

You’ll get to take part in a training session, which is great fun. You’ll leave a scent trail and then hide a couple of kilometres from base with a ranger, waiting for Memusi and Nanyokie to hunt you out. Visitors really enjoy this activity, especially families with children. The handlers also give a full briefing on how the dogs are trained and what their job is, it’s a wonderful way to learn about anti-poaching work in Kenya. Sometimes, it can be hard to get the guests to leave, particularly the kids, because they’re having so much fun!

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Annette, who's travelled extensively in Kenya. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife in the Mara, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot for your sundowner.
