Things to do in Zimbabwe

Go on safari from your starbed at Victoria Falls River Lodge

Listen to the sounds of the bush and watch for fish eagles, elephants and hippos in the river. It’s like being on safari in your own room…

By Roddy Meiring

Our riverside setting makes Victoria Falls River Lodge pretty special. We’re in the Zambezi National Park, with one of the main game corridors right outside our lodges, which means guests don’t have to travel to game sites.

The lodge caters well to different types of visitors, including families. As well as our luxurious thatched tents made from canvas, glass and timber we now offer what I call our four ‘cuddle puddles’ — four Island Tree House Suites built on a private island, just a couple of minutes’ boat ride from the main lodge. Each tree house comes with a personal butler, so guests can tuck themselves away and listen to the sounds of the bush and watch for fish eagles, elephants and hippos in the river. It’s like being on safari in your own room.

Can it get any better? Yes, it can. Our brand-new, stylish Starbed Treehouses jut out over the Zambezi river. From the stylish rooftop ‘lounge’, which features a four-poster ‘starbed,’ you can see the spray from Victoria Falls.

Giving back to the community is important to us, and as we’re in the National Park we decided to build a pre-school for the park’s staff. Twenty-three pupils aged between three and six attend. We also pay the living costs and salaries of some of the scouts working in the park’s anti-poaching units.

To make the most of our setting we have a fleet of five luxury river cruisers. You can step off the boat from one of our sunset sails and then five minutes later be in your room with a G&T, watching elephants going for a swim. It’s no wonder children love it. Our weekly live cooking evenings are also very popular. Guests can interact with the chefs and sample some of the local dishes and learn about the ingredients. It’s a great way to experience African food, culture and hospitality in a beautiful setting.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Adele, who's travelled extensively in Zimbabwe. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember – the ranger who can show you the best game viewing and fishing spots on the Zambezi, the guide who’ll introduce you to ‘moonbows’ at Victoria Falls and the locals who’ll share their dinner with you.
