Gorilla treks and volcano views at Wilderness Sabyinyo

The lodge is a stone’s throw from Volcanoes National Park, the starting point for magical gorilla treks and seeing golden monkeys…

Wilderness Sabyinyo is a home away from home. It’s set in 31 acres of land on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park, with around half the world’s wild population of mountain gorillas a short distance away. From our veranda, we have views of six volcanoes which are part of the Virunga Massif, which straddles Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  The lodge is a stone’s throw from the park entrance, which is the starting point for magical gorilla treks and seeing golden monkeys.

Our nine en-suite cottages are built in a typical Rwandan style, with stone and terracotta, which blend seamlessly into the verdant landscape, and are secluded and private. The use of natural materials such as bamboo and wood add details that respect Rwandan culture, with traditional Agaseke baskets found throughout the lodge. Together they provide the sense of bringing the lush elements from outside into the cottages and the main lodge.

Sabyinyo is also the perfect location for avid birders, with over 50 different species of birdlife that are endemic to this area in Northern Rwanda and the Albertine Rift. Our guests can unwind and relax in the comfort of the lodge, and then explore our nature walks and fledgling farm. Several paths lead through the eucalyptus and our bamboo forest to reach our expanding vegetable garden sprouting beneath Mount Sabyinyo.

We are passionate about and committed to making the lodge and our food as sustainable and ethically sourced as possible.  Thanks to the fertile volcanic soil, we are able to grow a variety of produce, as our aim is to provide an ethos of a farm-to-table menu.

When the lodge opened in 2008, its purpose was to support local people and gorilla conservation. This is a message to which we subscribe and which we perpetuate through our projects. The lodge is Rwanda’s first community owned and community led and has pioneered this community concept.

Our long-term commitment to the community and conservation is shared with our guests, as a percentage of each stay goes into the Sabyinyo Community Livelihood Association (SACOLA). Since opening in 2008, we have raised nearly $4 million which SACOLA has used to build schools, homes, health clinics and provide seeds and cows to the local community. In addition, there is an exciting sewing project, run on donations, that supports single mothers and teaches them to sew to allow them to have a vocation and become self-sufficient.
