Hemingways Nairobi: a haven in the heart of the capital

Hemingways Nairobi is a peaceful oasis in the heart of Kenya’s busy capital city…

By Richard Kimenyi
General Manager, Hemingways Nairobi

Hemingways Nairobi is a peaceful oasis in the heart of Kenya’s busy capital city. The hotel lies in the quiet Karen suburb, which is named after Out of Africa author Karen Blixen; her former farm is just a two-minute drive from here. We opened in 2013 as the third boutique hotel in the five-star Hemingways collection, which references the famous writer and Africa enthusiast Ernest Hemingway.

Set among landscaped grounds with fountains and rose bushes, Hemingways is a symmetrical plantation-style property complete with large windows that flood the rooms with natural light. After sightseeing in the city or visiting the nearby Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, guests can relax by the pool, work-out in the gym or indulge at our spa, which is set in its own wing overlooking the gardens. People love our French-inspired treatments and we use native African ingredients in all our oils and spa products.

Stay in one of our 45 suites, which are spread over two wings and include luxury penthouse and presidential options with high ceilings and plush seating areas. You’ll be waited on by your own personal butler from the moment you arrive, with the typical warmth and kindness inherent in East African culture. We get a lot of positive feedback from guests about our exceptional service, as well as our Brasserie, which serves international dishes with European and South Asian flavours.

The private balconies are a highlight, with views that stretch over the gardens to the Ngong Hills. It’s a really magical sight and one that you can also enjoy while sipping a sundowner at our bar. We’re a short drive from Nairobi National Park, which is the only national park in the world located within a capital city. The grassy plains are home to amazing wildlife including endangered black rhinos, leopards, lions, giraffes, hyenas and over 400 species of birds.
