La Residence Phou Vao, A Belmond Hotel is loved for its tranquil ambience, positioned on top of the ‘hill of kites’ on the edge of Luang Prabang. This is where young Lao princes used to come to fly their kites in the pre-revolution years. The property has a very interesting history. Built towards the end of the Laotian Civil War, it was occupied by the communist party and later used as a royal summer house, then to accommodate government guests such as Russian politicians.
Today, it is a luxury hotel with mountain views, just a five-minute tuk-tuk ride from the centre of Luang Prabang. We’ve kept the building’s blend of French colonial and Lao style, which features quality materials like silk, teak and parquet floors. We have beautiful tropical gardens, two infinity pools with views and even a small Buddhist temple. In the evenings, a former monk performs a traditional Laos Baci ceremony.
Guests really like the history of the property, combined with the authentic Laos culture and stunning panoramic views. Visitors come from town to dine at our popular Mountain Terrace restaurant, known as one of the best in Luang Prabang, which serves a fusion of Euro-Asian flavours. Other luxury facilities include our open-air Mekong Spa, which uses lemongrass-infused Laotian therapies and has won awards for excellence.
One of our guest highlights is the 500 candles dinner, where you can experience private dining by the lotus pond, illuminated by candles, while musicians play for you. It’s important for us to give back to the local community, so we employ 80 percent local staff, support Luang Prabang Orphanage school and take part in city clean-ups. We’ve also eliminated all plastic use to make our hotel more environmentally friendly.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Adele, who's travelled extensively in Laos. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the guide who can hone your pétanque skills while playing with the locals, the conservationist who can take you trekking with Asian elephants and the monks who can school you in the craft of Makbeng and Pasaat Pheung making.
