Intimate and private safaris at Little Garonga

Food is an integral part of our safari experience from hearty breakfasts, indulgent afternoon teas and evening dishes of traditional cuisine…

By Bernie Smith
Owner Garonga Safari Company

Ten years after opening Garonga Safari Camp, I built Little Garonga in 2007 to create an intimate safari lodge for families or friends travelling together.

Little Garonga has just three thatched air-conditioned suites all with Wi-Fi. The Hambleden Suite is the largest, with two bedrooms and a lounge area leading out onto the deck where there is a swimming pool. The bathtub is made of hand-beaten copper and is a central feature of the spacious bathroom.  The Chiltern and Buckingham Suites each have one bedroom and all suites have both indoor and outdoor showers. The suites are positioned to maximise the views of the bush and I’ve kept the style to blend in with the natural landscape outside but retaining luxurious features inside including a mini bar and a cosy fireplace.

Just a short distance from Little Garonga is my latest project, MCH Private Tented Camp. I named the camp after my mother Maria Carmela Hambleden and from its elevated position there are wonderful views over the kopjes to the Drakensberg Mountains. There are just four air-conditioned tents, created with a nostalgic safari feel. I particularly love the Victorian toilet, complete with a Giles book of course. Solar-powered, this camp is for exclusive use and has a lounge, pool, massage sala, library and dining room.

I provide a dedicated private team of staff to look after the groups staying at both Little Garonga and MCH Private Tented Camp. Food is an integral part of our safari experience from hearty breakfasts, indulgent afternoon teas and evening dishes of traditional and international cuisine created by our team of chefs led by Reineth and Venecia.

As well as our game drives we offer guided bush walks or guests may prefer to relax on their deck in the hammock looking out for wildlife that often comes through the camp. Microlight flights and the chance to bathe or sleep out under the stars are all part of the Garonga experience.

Alfred & Bernie Smith

Bernie Smith developed his love for safari on a trip to East Africa with his parents in 1977. He decided to move from England to find a wildlife area that he could develop for eco-tourism. In 1997 he opened Garonga Safari Camp in the Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve and Little Garonga Safari Lodge followed in 2007. Bernie is the vision behind Garonga’s  philosophy of ‘safari for the soul’.
