Kirawira Serena Camp is a luxurious place to stay in the heart of the Serengeti, styled after the tented camps of the 1900s. You’ll feel as if you’ve been transported back in time, especially in the mess tent which is decorated with antiques, Persian rugs and chaise lounges. Kirawira offers a five-star experience that includes staff clad in white Swahili robes, a stunning pool, massage service and five-course gourmet menu paired with world-class wines.
Our 25 tents are set on raised platforms and loved for their old-fashioned, Edwardian style. As well as wooden furniture and brass lamps, they feature modern luxuries like en-suite bathrooms, as well as private terraces where you can admire views over the endless Serengeti plains. Kirawira lies on a hilltop in the Serengeti’s western corridor, so it showcases brilliant views of the Grumeti River. During migration, you can watch massive herds of wildebeest crossing the Grumeti, trying to avoid the snapping jaws of crocodiles.
Kirawira is an unfenced camp so you might see wildlife wandering around including impalas, elephants, dik diks and plenty of birds. Our guides will take you on game drives in Serengeti National Park, where you’ll have a chance to see the Big Five and all kinds of other animals, from hippos to hyenas. It’s spectacular during the migration, when you can see vast herds of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Grumeti and flocking across the plains. We’re just a short drive from many of the key river crossing points. You’ll end the day with sundowners in the bush, which is an African safari tradition.
Our guides can also take guests to visit the nearby village, which lies along Lake Victoria. It’s an opportunity to learn about how the Sukuma people live, you can try their ancient fishing techniques and meet traditional healers. The Serena group is very keen to hire staff from the local communities, so some of the Sukuma and Kuria people now work at Kirawira. We even offer Swahili lessons and cooking classes at camp to help guests get a taste of our culture.
