Roving Bushtops: Africa’s only mobile tented camp

By Philip Mbeke
Camp Manager, Roving Bushtops

Roving Bushtops is a completely unique African safari experience: a luxury mobile camp that roves around the Serengeti, following wildlife migration patterns. We usually move twice a year, packing everything into a special unit that we call the Rover. With just eight luxury tents, we’re the smallest and most exclusive camp in the Bushtops family, launched in 2015. We’re proud to be a zero-footprint, solar-powered camp that allows each of our sites to regenerate when we leave – it’s like we’ve never been there.

For part of the year we set up in the central Seronera region of the Serengeti, which has a network of river valleys that draws animals all year round. Between December and March, we head to the southern Kusini area to see the calving of wildebeests, which is a magical experience. We always construct camp to face sunset and since we’re within the Great Migration corridor, you’ll often see huge herds of wildebeest and zebra passing by on their annual circuit between the Mara and the Serengeti.

You’ll stay in one of our five-star, en-suite canvas tents that open on three sides to allow uninterrupted views of the Serengeti. There’s even a wooden deck with a hot tub where you can savour panoramic views of the open plains, acacia woodlands and rivers. Ask your private butler to arrange a massage or deliver drinks and canapés to your hot tub so you can end the day in pure luxury. If you’re visiting as a family, we can also combine tents to cater for your whole group.

When it comes to dining, there’s a restaurant where you can feast on gourmet cuisine paired with wines from our portable cellar. There are no set meal times so you can eat whenever you like or even enjoy a private bush breakfast. At each Roving Bushtops location, we know the best sundowner spots and end the day with drinks and stories around a campfire as darkness falls over the Serengeti.

Game drives are the main activity at Bushtops and the Serengeti never disappoints. Head out early in the morning, for the whole day or in late afternoon. Each tent has access to one of our specially-adapted 4×4 Toyotas that have open sides for amazing wildlife spotting. You’ll have an experienced driver-guide with you, plus a spotter from the Kuria community. You’ll see all types of animals, from lions and elephants to giraffes, hippos, baboons and warthogs – to name just a few.

Guests tell us that they love the exclusive feel of Roving Bushtops, our quirky Rover and attentive staff. Most of them hail from the communities surrounding Serengeti National Park and know the wildlife and landscape intimately. In fact, all of our security guards and spotters are from the local Kuria community. Many guests like to visit the local Robanda schools, which we support through sponsorships and donations; ask us if you’d like to visit or donate during your stay.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Gemma, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
