Sarova Mara Game Camp: Maasai family fun

Our family-friendly safari tents are especially luxurious, with wooden flooring and four-poster beds complemented by African artwork…

By Nicholas Maina
Lodge Manager at Sarova Mara Game Camp

Sarova Mara Game Camp offers all of the joys of life: food, nature, hospitality and culture in the heart of the Maasai Mara. The camp is fenced and set in an open area complete with a lake and savannah views; at night you can hear the lions and elephants from your tent, it’s a magical experience. Although we’re a large lodge with 75 tents, everything has been built in harmony with the landscape and there are nature paths you can explore with Maasai guides.

Our tents are especially luxurious, with wooden flooring and four-poster beds complemented by African artwork and some of the fanciest bathrooms in the Mara. We pride ourselves on being a family-friendly camp, offering two-bedroom tents that are sheltered by a wooden structure, so they have a safe yet adventurous feel. Our Ozone Kids’ club is extremely popular with guests, we offer tailored activities for all ages, including arts and crafts, nature walks, archery and pool games.

Guests love the food at Sarova Mara. Meals are served in our Isokon restaurant, which is a beautiful wooden structure with an outdoor dining area, all lit by lanterns and decorated with Maasai art. We serve high-end buffets featuring a diverse range of Kenyan and international cuisine. Enjoy live cooking stations and fresh produce from our organic garden, inspired by the Maasai people who possess a huge wealth of native plant knowledge.

We also offer private dining experiences such as our traditional Maasai manyatta dinners. I’d highly recommend a bush breakfast after an early-morning game drive or balloon safari out on the Mara plains, surrounded by wildlife. Guests often end the day with spectacular sundowners, where we serve a selection of drinks and cocktail bites which you can enjoy while soaking up the sunset, often accompanied by Maasai dancers.

Most guests spend their days exploring the Maasai Mara on game drives. Our guides are phenomenal and know exactly where to find the animals; you’ll often see prides of lions, cheetahs and all kinds of plains game. There have been plenty of times that I’ve managed to spot all of the Big Five while staying at Sarova Mara. If you’ve come to watch the Great Migration, the wildlife viewing is particularly exciting and the river crossings aren’t far from camp – you can spend all day out in a 4×4 with a picnic lunch.

If you prefer to just sit and relax, then our camp is perfect for that too. We have a freeform pool in shady gardens, there’s table tennis and a lake for kayaking and catch-and-release fishing. You can also stop by our spa tent for a soothing massage with stunning views of the plains. One of the top features at Sarova Mara is our team. Most hail from the  local community, who we support with job training and funding for schools and medical clinics. The Maasai people are wonderful – so warm, friendly and experts on the local wildlife and landscape.
