Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge: the traditional African-style safari lodge

The design of Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge was inspired by traditional African villages, with thatched-roof rondavels…

By Vincent Matei
Lodge Manager at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge

Our African-style lodge lies in the heart of the Serengeti, on the front line of the Great Migration. The design of Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge was inspired by traditional African villages, with two-storey stone rondavels that have thatched roofs, like a Maasai house. When you sit on the balcony, you’ll notice wooden pillars decorated with Makonde carvings. Our dining room lies in two huge rondavels, which have soaring ceilings and local artwork on the walls.

We’re set on a hill surrounded by acacia trees, with panoramic views across the grasslands. The area is rich with wildlife, including the Big Five, and from our infinity pool you can often see giraffe, elephants and zebra wandering past. The most exciting views are during the Great Migration, as large herds pass right by the lodge. Rather than the sound of traffic, you wake to the natural noise of animals and birds. You can sit on your terrace with a coffee and watch the Serengeti’s world-famous wildlife.

I advise guests to take a full-day game drive, especially during the Migration. That way, you can explore further with one of our expert guides, stopping to watch predators hunt and herds make river crossings. We have a special spot where you can have breakfast in the bush, with wildebeest grazing just a few metres away. We also offer hot air balloon trips over the Serengeti and guided walking safaris, where you’ll discover the area’s flora and get to see animals up close, with the safety of a ranger. Afterwards, you can relax by the pool, have a massage and enjoy private sundowners in the Mbingwe Valley.

Our core philosophy at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is quality of service – everything is personalised, the food is top-notch and our staff go above and beyond. Most of our team have been to tourism or hotel management college and as a company, we strive to employ people from nearby villages who can offer that local knowledge. Serena believes in supporting our communities, offering help and funding for schools, sourcing our food locally and by donating to the maternity ward on International Women’s Day.

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Adele, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
