Guests are drawn to the hotel’s rich history – it pre-dates even the Gateway to India – and our exceptional Taj service…
There’s nothing like the Taj Mahal Palace – it’s one of India’s most famous hotels and a Mumbai institution that dates back to 1903. Guests are drawn to the hotel’s rich history; it pre-dates even the Gateway to India, which was built to welcome King George V. The building has stood over Mumbai throughout the British rule and India’s battle for independence, it also served as a hospital during WWI. You can trace this extraordinary legacy on our hotel heritage walk, which ends with a high tea.
The Taj is known for its Rajput palace architecture, with its domed roof and Moorish corridors. The building is filled with high ceilings and archways, crystal chandeliers and antique flooring and furniture. Over the years, the hotel has been refurbished in keeping with its original style but we’ve added a pool, spa and art gallery. In the 70s, the new tower wing was built which has a modern feel, with floor-to-ceiling windows. We now have a total of 543 rooms and 56 suites including the presidential suite, which has hosted guests like Barack Obama and the British royals, William and Kate.
There are six restaurants at the Taj Mahal Palace, which are some of the best in Mumbai. All specialise in one specific cuisine, from Chinese at Golden Dragon to Middle Eastern food at Souk, our rooftop tower restaurant. Wasabi by Morimoto has been voted one of the 50 top restaurants in Asia and Masala Kraft is loved for its Indian dishes. We’re ideally placed in Mumbai for visiting the city’s major attractions too, including the Victoria Terminus train station, museums and art galleries.
What’s really exceptional about the Taj Mahal Palace, aside from its iconic history, is its award-winning service. Our dedicated staff have been trained to Taj standards and everything is personalised, from a welcome letter when you arrive to surprise cakes for special occasions. Our staff are known for their warmth and hospitality, it’s engraved into our culture. We love to arrange unique experiences for guests like yacht hires and harbour cruises – we can even take you out for a city tour in our royal carriage.
