Things to do in Kenya

Take a Samburu camel safari in Loisaba Conservancy

The camels are real characters, they all have their own personalities and guests have lots of fun getting to know them….

By Mohamed Iribo
Safari Guide at Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp

Travel like the locals on this camel safari with a Samburu guide in Loisaba Conservancy. Introduced to the region around 8,000 years ago, camels are very common in northern Kenya as they’re well suited to the arid climate, don’t need much water and aren’t usually targeted by wild predators. In fact, the local Samburu people have owned camels for centuries and use them mainly for transport purposes. The safari usually begins with an early-morning game drive, which leads into the camel ride around 8am.

A Samburu guide will introduce you to the animals and give you a full briefing about their behaviour before you start. The camels are real characters, they all have their own personalities and guests have lots of fun getting to know them. The ride usually lasts about an hour and along the way, your guide will point out different plant species and animal footprints. You’ll likely pass giraffes and elephants on your journey. I think the camel safari is a really quirky experience and a great way to learn about Samburu life.
