Visit a local primary school in the village of Khumaga from Leroo La Tau

You might find yourself speaking to the shop owner or a nurse, hearing stories from the people that call the village home…

By Ollie Maitapiso
Guide at Leroo La Tau

At Leroo La Tau we put a big emphasis on supporting the local community, and we want to give guests a chance to see that in action.

So on the last day of their stay, on the way to the airstrip, we take them to the village of Khumaga, where most of our staff live. We visit the local primary school, which we began working with in 2008 and support in a number of ways. It’s one of the initiatives funded by Desert & Delta Safaris – guests booking the Community and Conservation package contribute $60 towards these projects.

When we arrive at the school, we’re met by the headmaster or another teacher who tells us a bit about the school and its students, and shows us around. Sometimes, if we arrive during break time, we get the chance to meet some of the children and even play a quick game of football with them, but this depends on the day.

Afterwards we do a tour around the village to see some of the houses, stop in a local shop and see the clinic – you might find yourself speaking to the shop owner or a nurse, hearing stories from the people that call the village home. We’re always warmly welcomed by the local residents and guests often get the chance to stop and chat, which is one of the highlights of the visit.

We get really good feedback from the trip – guests love meeting the children and learning how their stay is helping to benefit the community. It offers a completely different side to the rest of their holiday, so they leave feeling culturally enriched and hopefully a bit more knowledgeable about the region and its people, with meaningful stories to share when they come back home.

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like James, who's travelled extensively in Botswana. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife in Chobe, the village chiefs who'll give you an insight into local life and the helicopter pilots who can land you on an island in the Delta never visited by humans before.
